Incase you have been hiding under a rock, there’s a new marijuana movement growing. Unlike the stoner culture associated with Cheech & Chong it is all about exploring ways this pretty green plant can help with your health.
Amongst the most promising is the use of medical cannabis. A new study carried out by the Salk Institute is providing insight into the way medical cannabis actually counters the degenerative effects of Alzheimer’s disease.
Scientists have new evidence that suggests that THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) the active compound in marijuana has been found to promote the removal of toxic clumps of amyloid beta protein in the brain, which are thought to kickstart the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
This is so incredibly exciting and groundbreaking although THC like compounds as a therapy still need to be tested in clinical trials so watch this space
I decided to do my own investigation in the miracle of the green stuff and here is my week! Keeping in mind marijuana is illegal I had to seek other ways to test the benefits.
Day 1. Hempseed Protein Powder
Starting with the easiest option I went to Wise Cicada who have a great selection of powders and I purchased a bag by Raw Planet. It did make me laugh – on the packet its says Hemp protein powder is only legally able to be sold as animal feed in NZ though it is legal for humans to consume. A great way to get around an amazing product that is loaded with γ-linolenic acid (an omega-6 fat) which is ideal for brain function and in turn it could help to prevent Alzheimer’s. It also has a huge amount of antioxidants which assist to combat accelerated aging. Fantastic as I am all for staying younger! This will definitely stay on my breakfast menu.
Here’s my recipe
Charlottes Hemp Seed Smoothie for a Beautiful Mind
2 Tablespoons of hemp seed protein powder
1 Frozen banana
A handful of chopped Kale
1 cup of coconut milk or coconut water
Throw it all in the blender and whizz
Day 2. Hempseed Oil
I was relieved to hear hemp seed oil is 100% legal in New Zealand and can be purchased from many online stores – phew no dodgy deals here! Hemp seed oil has a large range of medicinal and health boosting benefits including being one of nature’s richest sources of Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) and Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA). I tried im·bue health 25 premium CBD capsules. At $4 a capsule I am promised more sustained concentration. So stand by and I will let you know how I am going in a few weeks time. It apparently has had some good results for people with early to mid stage Alzheimer’s to help with agitation and anxiety. I wish I could have given this to my mother a few years back when her agitation was at its worst. I would very much recommend this for anyone you know who is experiencing high anxiety due to Alzheimer’s but of course get advice from their doctor first.
Day 3. Medicinal Marijuana
I was ecstatic to discover you can now get a Cannabis extract called Sativex on prescription from your GP. As I don’t require it legally I could not purchase it, however we could apply for it for my mother. Unlike Hemp oil and Hemp seed protein Sativex does produces a high which is the magical THC. While the ratio of THC to CBD may be less than that of more potent cannabis strains, you still get the benefits which leads me back to the wonderful possibility of being able to remove toxic clumps from the brain that cause Alzheimer’s.
Day 4. Cooking with Marijuana
As we all know this is illegal in many parts of the world so I lived vicariously through the internet and read a great story about cooking with cannabis Vogue U.S online. In America in 23 states, and D.C., have legalised the cultivation, sale, and use of cannabis for medical purposes, and two states—Colorado and Washington—have legalised it for recreational use. I was interested to read that several cooking schools now have classes to teach in the art of cooking the ganja! I could not help but think the U.S is way ahead in so many ways yet sadly very backwards when it comes to politics. So while I did not cook up a batch of hash cookies I believe through my research there are some very good benefits as long as it is not consumed by people under 30 who’s brains are still developing and also in moderated doses for the prevention of Alzheimer’s and other diseases such as Parkinson’s and not forgetting it as a pain relief for cancer and other terrible diseases.
Day 5. Marijuana Terpenes
Terpenes are the aromatic oils which give pot its delightful aroma. Each terpene has its own medicinal properties such as anti-inflammatory effect, mood elevation or relaxation. Fortunately these beneficial terpenes are legal and approved for use in foods, cosmetics and aromatherapy. Terpenes in a similar ratio to that found in high grade medical marijuana may offer many of the benefits med users are seeking. I headed to an online store called Mind Fuel that had different varieties of Terpenes with names like Zen, Boost and Flow. Zen sounded like what I was after so I ordered it and popped it in an essence burner that my beautiful mama and I were able to enjoy. I did certainly feel very chilled and although mum is unable to smile she was very happy and relaxed.
There you have my week of investigation on the benefits of Mariijuana. As I have been very concerned in the past about getting Alzheimers this for me personally is so incredibly promising that I will be following the Salk Institute with their development on the prevention and reversal of Alzheimers for a Beautiful Mind
So what do you think about medical Marijuana???
